Holly, Wood & Vine

Holly, Wood & Vine is a New York City based landscape design, installation and maintenance company that has been designing and collaborating on a diverse range of corporate, public and residential projects for 20 years.

Although we specialize in residential roof tops and terraces, our continuing relationship with managing agents means we are frequently asked to design and maintain communal roof tops, semi-private courtyards and building fronts. We have also contributed to the beautification of the city through our relationship with the New York City Parks Department.

Our professional and personable design team approaches gardens with sensitivity to the unique site conditions of every garden space and the varied needs and desires of each client. We incorporate design and practicality with horticultural expertise.

Because we provide design, installation and maintenance services, we’re able to see a garden through all phases, from initial concepting to day-to-day maintenance. We manage every aspect of a project, remaining involved from start to finish. Our goal is to have an ongoing relationship with our clients and their gardens.

While most of our commissions are based on in-house designs, we have established relationships and collaborations with landscape architects, architectural firms, and general contractors. We also work closely with
a small group of select carpenters, masons, lighting and irrigation specialists. These long-term, trusted relationships provide us and our clients with accountability and confidence.

  • WEST VILLAGE PENTHOUSE
    ROOF TERRACE

    PLANNING

    Before designing any project, we put together a program which includes the needs and desires of the client, an analysis of the existing space and site location, the assets and constraints of the space, and a general budget. Once all this is assessed, we present schematic sketches, elemental options, and agree on a final layout and planting plan.

  • BEFORE

    In this West Village roof terrace project, the necessity of roof reparations created an opportunity to start with a clean slate. We couldn’t help but try to save a few of the existing trees; this is always an endeavor with construction going on. The design challenges we faced included blending the railing and the ugly vent pipes with a clean contemporary look. The views are spectacular, and the client wanted to be able to look out and see them. To their good fortune, we didn’t have to forfeit much privacy to accomplish this.

  • PLANTING

    Planting installation may look chaotic, but there is extreme method applied, and an organization that has to function within the constraints of working in a small space. The carefully selected plant materials are laid out by the designer according to plan, and our crew of conscientious gardeners work together to bring the planting plan to life.

  • AFTER

    The client wanted a contemporary design to work with their newly renovated interior. The modular planters are custom built, wrapped with lead-coated copper and a black patina finish. They requested a seating and dining area, which would feel like a garden, without blocking out the stimulating and wondrous NYC environment. While incorporating the cityscape, we succeeded in creating an organic garden oasis, a warm contemporary nest floating above the high-energy urban infrastructure.
